“The trend still goes on year by year, it’s sparkly, sequined dresses with corsets, lots of beads. The colour that is dominating this year and taking over is chocolate brown.”
While the colour palette has shifted toward rich, earthy tones, the shapes and silhouettes remain bold. Kokientle shared that figure-hugging styles continue to reign supreme, especially with features that bring extra drama to the dance floor.
“They always ask for mermaid styles, and definitely snatched-waisted dresses as well as corset dresses.”
As for whether other events like the Durban July influenced the looks, Kokientle believes there may have been some indirect inspiration, but today’s matriculants are clear on their fashion goals.
“Not really, but with the big event Durban July, I believe many students got some inspiration there. However, these youngsters know what they want and how they want to look.”
