University of Limpopo Suspends Student for Attempted Rape

LIMPOPO —The University of Limpopo suspended a student who was accused of allegedly raping another student on campus.

The university released a statement on 5 August and confirmed that the student was suspended on 4 August. The university has also launched an investigation into the alleged incident, but did not indicate when the incident allegedly took place.

The University said that support services have been provided to the affected student and condemns all acts of violence.

Incidents of rape and alleged rape

The Pretoria High Court sentenced a serial rapist to over 400 years' imprisonment on 21 May 2025. He broke into numerous houses, robbed his victims and raped the women while threatening them. The courts ruled that he would serve his sentence concurrently.

A man from Mpumalanga committed suicide, and his body was found in June. The 45-year-old man, who lived in Letsie, faced allegations from his daughter, who opened a case of rape against him after years of sexual abuse.

His daughter alleged that he started raping her in 2017, and she approached her mother in 2024 and told her about what happened. The mother only reported the incident when her husband started harassing her as well.

An 18-year-old woman was attacked and raped in Limpopo on 18 June 2025. The woman, who was heavily pregnant, was on her way back home from a clinic check-up in Tshisele village outside Thohoyandou when she was attacked. The police are still hunting for the suspect.
