GAUTENG – An investigation has been launched into a fire that destroyed three Greyhound buses in Boksburg near OR Tambo International Airport.

Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) teams received a distress call on Sunday, 17 August 2025, and found that three buses and a trailer were on fire. While officials were able to contain the blaze, they could do little to save the vehicles already on fire.

Was anyone injured in the fire?

City of Ekurhuleni DEMS spokesperson, William Ntladi, confirmed that no injuries were reported and that the cause was unknown, but remained the subject of an investigation.

He also said that firefighters from three stations were dispatched and found three buses and one trailer up in flames upon arrival. Ntladi also noted that they were able to contain the fire before more buses were destroyed.

“The fire was well contained and put to rest by our fire crews, in conjunction with Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA) fire rescue; their rescue and water tanker were on site. Two buses managed to escape the fire and were driven to a safer area,” Ntladi noted.

South Africans believe the taxi industry is involved

Despite no cause of the fire being revealed as yet, some speculated online that the taxi industry was involved. Speculation ran rife following the recent fatal attack at Maponya Mall.

An e-hailing driver was shot in his vehicle, which was then set alight on 13 August 2025, allegedly by members of the taxi industry. Police confirmed that there is a history of tension between the two groups in the area.

In retaliation, a taxi was set alight the following day, allegedly by members of the Pimville community.

With tensions high in the province, many speculated that members of the taxi industry were behind the latest blaze. Others believed it could be protestors, who recently set alight a Home Affairs building in Germiston.

Vhuthu Nemukongwe asked:

“Taxi industry?”

Sol Khalishwayo suggested:

“Insurance🤔😂. That company is dying slowly.”

Andrew Mutasa said:

“From Home Affairs to Greyhound, they are moving fast.”

Adriaan Van Der Walt added:

“Ask taxi drivers if they have info.”

Philemon Bodiba stated:

“Taxi drivers must have played a part in that destruction, and there is no two ways about it.”

Connie Heyns agreed:

“Taxi involvement. No doubt. And the silence from the President, the Presidency, the police and the Department of Transport is loud in its absence. Cyril was much louder when defending and making a comment about the violence and disrespect shown to illegal migrants at medical facilities. He is scared of tackling taxi violence.”

Andries Joubert claimed:

“The cops are too scared to investigate these criminals in the taxi industry. They will rather sit and eat takeaways, which is showing in their bodies, instead of doing the job and honestly earning their salaries.”

Pretty Makobasena asked:

“So, we're only allowed to use taxis in this country?”

Wayne Jordaan added:

“It can only be the taxi industry. They've been doing this for some time now and have always fought against the bus companies. They are not the rulers of the transport industries, nor of the roads.”

Riki Tiki Tavi asked:

Home Affairs office goes up in flames

Briefly News also reported that a massive fire engulfed the Department of Home Affairs building in Germiston on 12 August.

While not confirmed, the fire was allegedly caused by protest action, as tyres were set alight in the vicinity.

Some community members were unhappy that they were evicted from a block of flats for not paying rent, leading to the protests.
