Banyana Banyana ended the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations on a sad note. They finished in fourth place after being defeated by Ghana in the third playoff.

Desire Ellis' team lost 4-3 to Ghana on penalties after the 120 minutes of play ended 1-1 at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium on Friday night. Nonhlanhla Mthandi scored for the defending champions after an assist from Jermaine Seoposenwe.

Alice Kusi scored for the Black Queens, but the South African Women's national team failed to return with a medal from Morocco.

Banyana Banyana missed out on the final after losing to Nigeria 2-1 in the semi-final and losing Gabriela Salgado to a serious injury in the match.

How much Banyana Banyana made from WAFCON

Before the start of the competition, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the increase in the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (“WAFCON”) prize money for the winners by 100%.

The total prize money expected to be spent in this year's competition is $3,475,000 (which is approximately R62 million).

In that money, Banyana Banyana will receive $300,000 (R5.4 million) for finishing fourth in the competition, while Ghana will take home $350,000 (R6.3 million) for finishing third.

The winner between the Super Falcons of Nigeria and the host Morocco in the final will walk away with the grand prize money of $1,000,000 (R18 million), while the loser in the final will earn $500,000 (R9 million).

What's next for Banyana Banyana?

There is a lot in the net for Banyana Banyana after failing to defend their title in Morocco. Ellis is expected to leave her post as the head coach of the team.

Thembi Kgatlana is also expected to be convinced to return to the team after missing this competition due to personal reasons.

A replacement for Seoposenwe would also be needed after she announced her retirement from international football at the end of the WAFCON.

They will be back in action against the Democratic Republic of Congo for next year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Kgatlana breaks silence after missing out on WAFCON

Briefly News also reported that Thembi Kgatlana broken her silence after being dropped from the Banyana Banyana squad for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Morocco.

The former Atletico Madrid and Benfica striker was part of the team that won the last edition of he competition in Morocco but she missed out on this year's tournament.
