Kaizer Chiefs lost the second edition of the Toyota Cup 3-2 on penalties to Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening.
The two sides were inseparable after regulation time, with the match ending 0-0 despite Amakhosi having a golden opportunity to seal it late on through a penalty, which was unfortunately missed by the usually dependable Inacio Miguel.

Chiefs dominated the early exchanges, showing glimpses of control and intent, but the Ghanaian outfit responded with greater aggression, committing more fouls and disrupting Amakhosi’s rhythm.

The condition of the pitch made the overall flow of the game somewhat disjointed, affecting the fluidity of play, especially in midfield, where Thabo Cele and Mshini Ngcobo worked tirelessly to link up with the attacking trio of Flavio Silva, Glody Lilepo and Mfundo Vilakazi.

In the 83rd minute, Chiefs were handed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock when they were awarded a penalty. But to the frustration of the home crowd, Miguel missed from the spot, allowing Kotoko to stay in the contest.

With no breakthrough in normal time, the match went to the dreaded penalty shootout. In a tense, sudden-death scenario, Asante Kotoko emerged victorious with a 3-2 scoreline. Chiefs’ spot-kick woes were evident, as Wandile Duba, Aden McCarthy, Pule Mmodi and Inacio Miguel all failed to convert their penalties, sealing a disappointing end for Amakhosi in front of their home fans.

Kaizer Chiefs were playing their fourth pre-season match, yet they were still searching for their first win. They recently completed a tour of the Netherlands, where they suffered three straight defeats.
They opened their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Vitesse, with Reeve Frosler, making his return from injury, scoring the only goal for Amakhosi. That was followed by a heavy 4-0 defeat to FC Utrecht, and then a third consecutive loss against NEC Nijmegen.
