“Without history, tradition and culture, you can’t be a brand. This brand has stood the test of time, and that’s why we need to share the platform with a team that was born in 1870 – that’s Amstel – because they are also strong on legacy and experience,” Khoza said.

Voices from the Club: Captains weigh in

Former Pirates captain Happy Jele lauded the partnership, saying:

“At Pirates, doing things the right way has always mattered — how we play, how we carry ourselves, how we connect. This partnership with Amstel isn’t just about beer, it’s about belief. Belief in legacy, belief in quality, and belief in unity. That’s what makes it special.”

The club’s newly appointed captain, Nkosinathi Sibisi, echoed Jele’s sentiments, calling the deal a “game changer” and urging supporters to drink responsibly.

“This is a big and iconic partnership. Two major brands are joining together with a shared goal to uplift and celebrate our supporters. It's not just about the 90 minutes on the field — it's about the friendships, the community, and the memories. Of course, we also encourage responsible drinking,” he said.

Sibisi was recently confirmed as the new captain, and in line with the club’s tradition, he was chosen through a confidential vote by the players.

In an official statement, the club said:

"Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm the appointment of a new captain and vice-captains ahead of the start of the 2025/26 season. The position of captain has been vacant since the departure of long-serving defender Innocent Maela. Maela had led from 2022, having taken over from another stalwart and legend, Happy Jele. In keeping with club tradition, the appointment came directly from the players themselves through a confidential voting process. Emerging as the team’s clear choice to wear the captain’s armband is defender Nkosinathi Sibisi."
